Imagine you’re setting up a pair of binoculars. If the lenses aren’t aligned with your eyes, everything appears blurry or distorted. But when adjusted just right, the view becomes crystal clear. That’s exactly what pupillary distance (PD) does for your glasses—it ensures that your lenses are positioned for sharp, accurate vision.
At CliC Rx, we require customers to provide their PD when placing an order, ensuring that their prescription lenses align perfectly with their eyes. But what exactly is PD, and how do you measure it? Let’s break it down.
What Is Pupillary Distance (PD)?
PD is the measurement between the centers of your pupils. It’s a critical number because it determines where the optical center of your lenses should be placed. If your PD is off, your vision may feel strained or slightly off-balance, even with the correct prescription.
There are two types of PD:

Single PD – A single measurement between the centers of both pupils. This is typically used for distance vision.
Dual PD – Two separate measurements, one for each eye. This is often needed for progressive or bifocal lenses, ensuring proper alignment for both near and far vision.
Where Do You Find Your PD?
Your eye doctor often includes your PD on your prescription, but sometimes it’s missing. If that happens, don’t worry—you can measure it yourself at home!
CliC Rx provides a simple Pupillary Distance Ruler to help you get an accurate measurement. All you need is a mirror, a straight ruler, and a little patience.
How to Measure Your PD at Home
- Stand in front of a mirror at about arm’s length.
- Hold a ruler against your forehead, keeping it level.
- Close one eye and align the zero mark of the ruler with the center of your open pupil.
- Open your closed eye and close the other to see where your other pupil lines up.
- Record the measurement in millimeters—that’s your PD!
If you need dual PD, measure each eye separately from the center of your nose to the center of each pupil.
