Honoring Glaucoma Awareness Month

January is Glaucoma Awareness Month, a time dedicated to shining a light on one of the leading causes of irreversible vision loss and one of the most misunderstood eye conditions.
Glaucoma is often called “the silent thief of sight” because it can develop slowly and without noticeable symptoms. In fact, many people do not realize they have glaucoma until vision loss has already begun. According to the National Eye Institute, more than 3 million Americans are living with glaucoma, and nearly half do not know it. Worldwide, the number climbs to over 76 million people, making glaucoma a global eye health concern.
What Is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, most often caused by increased pressure inside the eye. This damage is permanent, which is why early detection and ongoing eye care are so critical.
Symptoms to Watch For
In its early stages, glaucoma typically has no symptoms. As it progresses, some people may experience:

- Loss of peripheral (side) vision
- Tunnel vision in later stages
- Blurred vision or halos around lights, more common in acute forms
- Eye pain or pressure, less common but urgent when present
Because symptoms often appear late, routine eye exams are the most reliable way to catch glaucoma early.
Can Glaucoma Be Prevented?
There is no guaranteed way to prevent glaucoma, but there are powerful ways to protect your vision:

Schedule comprehensive eye exams, especially if you are over 40 or have a family history
Maintain healthy blood pressure and overall wellness
Wear protective eyewear to prevent eye injury
Follow treatment plans closely if diagnosed, since early care can slow or stop progression.
